1. The practice of medical oncology in BC is not restricted to any
institution in the province. While mine is probably the first of its kind on
the Vancouver Island, medical oncology has been practiced privately and
independently for more than ten years in several offices in the Lower
Mainland, and until recently in Kamploops, BC.
2. At a recent meeting with hospital and regional health administrative
leaders, it was agreed that cancer patients under my care would continue to
receive chemotherapy at the Nanaimo Cancer Clinic under my supervision, and
with me as their MRP. My services will co-exist at the cancer clinic with
those of BCCA. In the interest of resource management, only patients from
LHA 68 to LHA 69 (i.e. Ladysmith to Qualicum Beach) will access care at the
Nanaimo Cancer Clinic. Other patients will receive care in facilities within
their health district under my supervision.
3. Chemotherapy programs administered to patients under my care will be
the same as those that are administered elsewhere in the province and will
be comparable to international standards.
4. The discipline of radiation oncology is practiced only in the cancer
centres of BCCA in the province. These facilities are accessible to all
patients who require them. I will refer your patients there when indicated.
5. Patients under my care requiring consultative assessment from
site-specific specialists in the cancer centers within the province or
elsewhere in North America have the right of access to it, and I will
proactively encourage them to seek it when indicated. Standard practice
dictates that I seek the advise of individual site-specific experts and
tumor-site specific specialized groups for patients when indicated.
6. My practice of medical oncology and hematology covers all cancer types
and sites that are known to be manageable by chemotherapeutic modality, as
well as benign hematology.
