Title of AnnouncementPrivate Practice of Medical Oncology and Hematology in Parksville, BCSubtitle of announcementChallenges and OpportunitiesMarch 8, 2004 Dear Colleague: I am pleased to inform you that my new practice of medical oncology and hematology in Parksville, BC has taken off at the Jensen Medical Clinic in Parksville, BC, where I see my consultation cases. My oncology treatment services co-exist with those of the BC Cancer Agency at the Nanaimo Cancer Clinic. I supervise as MRP the management of my oncology patients there. I am also currently exploring opportunities of collaboration with the cancer care physicians and nurses of Port Alberni and Comox Valley in the provision of cancer management in the areas, thus, sparing their patients the inconvenience of commuting to Victoria and the Lower Mainland.
My services include the following:
· Initial consultations and second-opinion review of previous consultations;· Diagnosis of suspected malignant diseases;· Adjuvant chemotherapy of breast cancer and colo-rectal cancer;· Chemotherapy of all lymphomas;· Palliative chemotherapy of advanced and incurable cancers: lung, renal, prostate, ovarian, pancreatic, stomach, colo-rectal and breast cancers;· Diagnosis and treatment of paraneoplastic syndromes: hypercalcemia, SIADH, neurological etc.;· Oncologic emergencies (brain mets., superior vena cava syndrome; febrile neutropenia, cord compression etc).Hematology: · Initial consultations and second-opinion review of previous consultations;· Diagnosis of anemias;· Management of myeloproliferative disorders (CML, polycythaemia rubra vera, essential thrombocythemia);· Treatment of all non-acute leukemias;· Blood transfusion indications and complications;· Hypercoagulable states (DVT and their managements);· Thrombocytopenias;· Thrombocytosis;· Suspected myeloproliferative disorders;· Bone marrow sampling and investigations;· Lymphoma diagnosis and staging;· Myeloma diagnosis and management;· Bleeding disorders.In-patient services at NRGH: · Pre-surgical and post surgical assessments and consultations;· Diagnostic assistance for suspected malignancies;· Diagnostic assistance for anemias, hypercoagulable states, bleeding disorders; blood transfusion problems,· Management of chemotherapy complications, including febrile neutropenias;· Palliative therapy of metastatic cancers;· Intrathecal medication of craniospinal malignancies;· Pre-chemotherapy consultation for management of early breast and colo-rectal cancers;· Combined modality management of rectal and esophageal cancers, etc.I look forward to the opportunity of working with you and among you as well as in promoting the best practices of hematology and medical oncology in the community.
